Interview: Don Cheadle, Award Winning Actor
Publication: The OFFICIALIST A City Guide For Natives
Interview: Tara Gates Anderson
From time to time, I get a little nervous before interviews, but prior to interviewing
Don Cheadle, I was excited, anxious, curious, but never nervous.
From my first experience with him as the ruthless Mouse in Devil In A Blue Dress to
complicated, to put it nicely, Marty Kaan in Showtime’s House of Lies to the newly
released Miles Davis biopic, Miles Ahead, Don Cheadle continues to own the
characters he portrays with a sincerity that leaves you wanting more.
As I entered the lush interview suite, at the Ritz Carlton in Georgetown I
immediately laid eyes on a slim, very well dressed and to his own confession, a
slightly tired Don Cheadle. He was seated and rose as I walked toward him to
introduce myself. He greeted me with a warm electric smile that brought him back
to life and we began what I will say is one of my most beloved interviews to date.
After seeing Miles Ahead the night before, I was eager to learn what led Don to take
such an innovative approach to delivering an excerpt of Mile’s legendary life.
There is no perfect way to tell the story of a legend in an hour and forty-five minutes.
Cheadle changes the biopic game by brilliantly interpreting only a small sliver of time in the life of Miles
Davis. As both the lead and the films director Cheadle delicately intertwines flashbacks from the life of Davis that highlight passion, pain and
obscurity, Don delivered an unforgettable performance that shed light on what
shaped Miles the man and what ignited the birth of his complex and beloved art.
